:: Sailing Guide

Croatia sailing guide is intended to give you some basic, useful information to help you deal with normal and unexpected situations while on board, or even earlier, from getting a skipper's licence, to where and when you can get the information you need while sailing, etc. Croatia sailing guide does not only apply to the Adriatic, but will be useful in other places, whether you are using a motorboat, yacht, or other type of vessel.

Licence

A skipper's licence is proof that the person in charge of the boat is capably of sailing it and has the knowledge required for TOURIST navigation, sailing safety, elementary engine mechanics, meteorology, fire protection and also has a radio operator's certificate for the boat's VHF set.

If you do not have a skipper's licence, but have the necessary knowledge, you can take a test in the Split Harbourmaster's Office. Tests are held once or twice a week. The cost is around 600 kunas and you need to provide two passport-sized photographs.

Important numbers

However experienced you are in handling a boat, you will feel safer if emergency numbers are to hand, so that you can phone in case of danger or if you need assistance. No prefix is required for these numbers:

Combined emergency services number ... 112
Police...92
Fire Department ...93
Ambulance ...94
General enquiries ...981
Sea search and rescue ...9155 (VHF Channel 16)
Other important numbers are on info chart 101, which is displayed on all boats.

Danger signals

MAYDAY is used when a boat is in danger and seeks urgent assistance
PAN PAN is used to indicate that an urgent message must be sent regarding the safety of the crew or the vessel
SECURITE is a warning signal indicating that a coastal or radio station is about to emit a message regarding meteorological or navigational warnings.

Info chart

Apart from navigational charts, each boat has an info chart. This is a concise guide containing details relating to nautical tourism, such as the telephone numbers of harbourmasters' offices, filling stations, marinas and harbours. It also displays regulations concerning the legal status of the vessel, the necessary documentation and the channels used by coastal VHF stations emitting important information and weather forecasts.

Marinas

The eastern Adriatic is linked by a chain of marinas and harbours offering safe moorings for vessels in all weather conditions. Marinas comply to standards, and have toilets, showers, restaurants, water and electricity connections.

Marinas can be found on VHF Channel 17.
